Obama and His Abominable Appointment

When Barack Obama's Presidential campaign was getting into high gear, I understood perfectly why so many of my friends and family in the U.S. were backing him. After 8 years of horror under the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld regime, he seemed like a breath of fresh air. He promised "change you can believe in." One of those changes was to put a stop to the "revolving door" between agribusiness and the government. Well, he has - in a way.

With the appointment of Michael Taylor as senior advisor to the commissioner of the FDA, the revolving door has been removed and replaced with a wide open door. Now the former chief lobbyist for Monsanto doesn't even have to bother with lobbying.

I don't know about you, but I've never trusted Monsanto or genetically modified foods. From the beginning, messing with the genes of plants that did a perfectly good job of growing already didn't seem like a very good idea. Yes, I know, Monsanto enthusiastically told us how they were going to be the answer to the world's food supply problems, but it looked more likely to me that they were going to be the answer to Monsanto's profit problems, so I wasn't surprised in 2008 when I read about a spate of suicides by Indian farmers who had been conned into switching to GM seeds. In case you missed it, here's a report from the Mail Online: The GM genocide. The reason they were committing suicide was because they had borrowed heavily to buy Monsanto's GM seeds, having been promised unheard of crop yields. After their GM crops repeatedly failed and they fell hopelessly into debt, they committed suicide - by the thousands.

Not long ago, I was asked to write a short article about the safety of soya products. It was to be in response to an email to a website I write for. A concerned reader wanted to warn the public about the dangers of consuming soya products. He had contracted cancer and his oncologist attributed it to his vegetarian diet and over-consumption of soy beans. I did a lot of research on this one. What I discovered was that there was no historical connection between soya and cancer, but there is a modern connection. What is the connection? It is between GM soya and cancer. Worse, I learned about how Monsanto's GM soy was indirectly killing farmers in Argentina. You see, one of the genetic modifications made to the seeds is to make them resistant to the glysophate herbicide, a herbicide that is sold by, you guessed it, Monsanto, under the name Round Up. Argentinian farmers and families who lived near the fields where Round Up was being sprayed were contracting serious and deadly illnesses. According to summary of the official report, GM Soy. Sustainable? Responsible, "people living in soy-producing areas of Argentina began reporting problems in 2002, two years after the first big harvests of GM RR soy."

Just the other day I ran across a video called GM Crops - Farmer to Farmer. In it, Michael Hart, a Cornwall farmer, travels across the heartland of America talking to farmers about GM crops. The conclusion he comes to based on his interviews is that they are a con. The farmers get suckered into buying the seeds, find they don't perform as well as their natural seeds did and find it nearly impossible to switch back. In the meantime, the price of everything Monsanto goes up each year and they find it harder and harder to make a profit. You can read the summary here, but I urge you to watch the video. These are ordinary American farmers who know their business and never suspected they were being conned until it was too late.

And now President Barack Obama installs the chief lobbyist for Monsanto in a position of power within the FDA. For me it was beyond the last straw. I was already sick of Obama's murderous wars and weary of watching his well-rehearsed speeches, longing for the days when I watched GWB make a public fool of himself on television.

Issues like this are far larger than the occasional band-aids Obama delivers to his constituents. When a corporation takes control of our food supply, we are as good as doomed.

Rob another failure for the Obama administration, it is becoming quite a long list. This one could be the worst of the bunch, to endanger the food supply for the greed of a company like Monsanto is worse than anything that GWB ever did. I think Obama needs to step down immediately. Save us from ourselves, Thanks,

Peter

I was aware of many steps of destruction by the Obama admin but not this one. Thank you for bringing attention to the subject as it is vitally important.

It is a corporate run government & has been for many years, they just aren't hiding it like they used to. Even someone with good intentions, has an up hill battle as long as the wealthy control the strings. Monsanto and other corps like them are helping change the laws to their advantage. Now that corps are "people" they have the right to even run for president. Maybe that is their ultimate goal. I don't know why though, enough of congress seems to be doing a great job at destroying our earth, health, economy & the future of our kids. Nothing like making it easier for the rich at the expense of the poor. I just don't understand the people who vote against their own interests and well being, keeping these thieves and liars in power. I too wrote an article on the evils of Monsanto...Thanks for your info

I'm sick of Obama and his control fanatics. Thanks God we can vote this shyster and his croonies out of office next year. I enjoyed this very much. You have this laid out beautifully and it is easy to understand. Keep up the great HUBS. I must give this an “Up ONE and awesome.” I'm always your fan! RJ

Based upon your HUB, you might enjoy this HUB… I just added the video to this and wonder if it adds or detracts from the HUB...

Thanks for all the comments. Yes, the first thing we have to do is wake up. Then somehow we have to act. @Reynold Jay - that version of Over the Rainbow is my all time favorite and a perfect complement to your brilliant article.

Rob:

I had this subject on a list to be written about...don't have to now. You've done an excellent job with it. With these kinds of events and manipulations going on in full view of the entire world, it astounds me how so many people are just plain ignorant of the ramifications, and the only possible conclusion to continuing on this path of destruction. Our government officials are thumbing their noses at us when they flaunt their abuse of power in this way. Putting this guy in charge of the FDA is to ensure Monsanto becomes the controlling monopoly on the world's food supply. To have a one world government means eliminating as many individual powers as possible. We will eventually see a handful of corporations which control every aspect of living, and there will be no more free market competition.

Oh, btw, check out this forum: Was 911 an inside job? http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/82660

I ended up in a heated discussion with one of those who just don't use any logic when trying to convince people that questions only come from the nuts who are "conspiracy theorists". I think it's on the 2nd page

Terri, I had a look at that forum. The best 911 article I've read is this one: http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid= The title is You Only Believe the Official 9/11 Story if You Don't Know the Offical 9/11 Story. I wrote about it in a hub of my own, but it was mainly to draw attention to that article.

I wrote that Hub after trying to stomach the 911 remembrance services. At the time, I felt so sorry for all those people, I couldn't blame them for their stupidity, but after reading some of those forum comments, I wasn't feeling sorry for them anymore. "Stupid" isn't too harsh a word when you're dealing with people who have access to information such as that presented by Pilots for 911 Truth, Scholars for 911 Truth and Architects and Engineers for 911 Truth. As for the argument that questioning 911 is an insult to the victims, there are plenty of families of victims of 911 who are begging for answers. They just don't get air time.

I really appreciate the amount of time you spend writing and commenting here. Does anyone say you're just doing it for profit? I find that argument hilarious. I've made 24 cents on hubpages so far. Could easily have made $24 in the time it takes to write a single hub. Speaking of which, I've got to get back to work now. Thanks as usual for your great comments.

I just came across this article, India vs. Monsanto. For the first time ever, legal action is being taken against Monsanto. Good luck, India!

While reading this hub, the phrase that entered my mind was, "Well, shit!"

Voted it Up, and thanks for the information.

Update: Just noticed my comment above about India's legal action. Unfortunately, it looks like they just want a slice of the GM pie.

My reaction is much the same as KT's. Knowing that Dubya engaged in the same twisted kind of nepotism is cold comfort. I voted for Obama because, well seriously, McCain and Palin? Umm...nah. I still believe that it would take Solomon himself more than four years to sort out the mess that Bush made, but I expected much more from Obama. Thanks for posting this, even though it's not something I wanted to hear - voted up, useful and interesting.

Most decent Americans had no choice but Obama in 2008 and who would have foreseen how badly he betrayed his constituency? Take a serious look at Ron Paul this time around. He has had a consistent platform for over 20 years and another great recommendation for him comes from the mainstream media, who continually tries to marginalise and denigrate him. As I write this, Obama is softening us up for military intervention in Syria and Iran. God knows what this will lead to.

I liked Ron Paul last time, too. Every time I mention him to people, they are worried that he's too old. I would rather have some one I could trust, I don't care what age they are.

RobSchneider profile image

RobSchneider Hub Author 6 months ago

Funny you mention that. I just read the same thing on a pro Ron Paul blog. It pointed out that in previous generations, age was a bonus because age=experience=wisdom. Now younger candidates are preferred because they are perceived as strong and "up with the times." That's a bizarre concept to me.

Well, my Mom is 81, and she says being old is a full time job and a lot harder than she thought it would be. She also thinks that being President really ages a person. Maybe a lot of people feel that way.

I agree with you though. Wisdom counts for a lot.

If he gets that far, his choice for VP could help tip the scales in his favour.
